MARCH 2008 EVENTS
CSR and Sangamam Federation of Thiruchendur jointly celebrated International Women’s Day on 10th March 2008. The celebration was organized by the Sangamam Federation members and NEERA Staff in solidarity with the rural women in and around Thiruchendur area. The celebration aimed to bring together Sangamam Women members from rural areas to celebrate the Women’s achievements and boost their confidence by providing a platform for self assertion and creativity.
Mrs. Rokiyah Salma, Chairperson, Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board was the chief guest for the celebration. During her address she recalled that IWD is the day to put behind all divisions that divide women by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences and look back to a tradition that represent decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. She also remarked Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history and admired the passions that move the Sangamam Women to express their solidarity for a change in society. Mr. F.X.R. George, Director, SEDCO, Mr. T.S. Ramkumar, Director, CSR, Muthunayagam, Director, RED, Ms. Anne of Malteser International India, Mr. Pichai, Manager, LIC, Thirunelveli and many others felicitated the function.
A district level Advocacy Workshop on STD/HIV/AIDS is organized by CSR on 30th March 2008 at Nagercoil. The workshop aimed to address the issues that affect the people living with HIV/AIDS. Mrs. Ajitha Manothankaraj, President, District Panchayat, Lead Bank Manager, Leaders from Positive Networks and Police officials participated in the workshop. One of the outcomes of this advocacy workshop is that the lead bank manager proposed to address the lack of initiative among banks to give credit facilities to the people living with HIV/AIDS.
