LATEST ACHIEVEMENTS
Environment and Climate Resilient Initiatives
In this period, CSR initiated the following interventions in its project areas of Thiruchendur, Udankudi and Santhankulam blocks of Tuticorin District of Tamilnadu which is adrought and heat prone and coastal region with frequent vulnerability to cyclones.
- Sensitisation and awareness generation services among self-help group members and villagers on the recurring problems and issues of environment, drought, climate change, land degradation depletion and salination of ground water and locally led disaster preparedness and prevention.
- Promoted and supported for micro climate and environmentallyfriendly interventions such as organic farming, setting up of micro composting pits for preparation of organic manure using cow dung and locally available bio-mass and planting of trees particularly palmyra plantation, which has been linked with the culture, heritage and life and livelihoods of the local population.
- Initiated water conservation through home based rain water harvesting, preservation of existing water sources and village based sustainable use of water resources.
- Carried out climate resilient measures such as family and community based ground water recharge and sustainable use of water and land resources through self-help groups in areas devastated by desalination of water and degradation of land resources.
- Influenced the government through representation, engagement of local panchayats and advocacy for environments and climate friendly and protection initiatives through family and community-based interventions with the support of government.
Programme For Family Welfare and Women Development
CSR has successfully executed a three-year project of FAMILY WELFARE AND WOMEN DEVELOPMENT. Population control and enhanced quality of life in rural families were the goals of the project . Villages of Alwarthirunagari, Thiruchendur, Udankudy and Sathankulam blocks of Thoothukudi District were chosen for the purpose. The Project Team worked closely with government Block Medical Officers, Village Health Nurses, staff of Child - Mother Nutrition Centre and local volunteers.
CSR initiated the process of forming Village Health Sanitary Committees (VHSC) in the focus area to facilitate family planning and to encourage local participation in health related matters. 2,598 women and men were enabled to undergo family welfare procedure as against a fixed target of 2,500 . It was indeed the result of the collective efforts of the different stakeholders. CSR staff gave special attention to generating awareness on Non Scalpel Vasectomy [NSV]. Four awareness meetings were conducted for eligible NSV clients.
Child Development Programme- Kanyakumari District
The objective is to encourage and enable tribal children who are scattered all over in the hilly settlements of Thiruvattar and Melpuram blocks in Kanyakumari District to attend school the access of which is not so easy for them. Their parents are uneducated and they have to cross deep waters to approach the school. CSR set up 16 Tuition Centers to motivate the children to join schools and become literates like their counterparts from other sections of the society.
Besides focusing on their school curriculum, the Tuition Centers strive to improve their physical, mental and social wellbeing. The Tuition Centers were provided with Solar lanterns. Children’s Clubs promoted in the area develop their leadership qualities by way of skill development, participation in contests and through forums to voice their rights. Clubs that excelled in promotion of talents in children were honoured with awards. While 425 children benefitted totally through the project, 305 children became part of the Clubs promoted.
Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)
Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) is a program initiated by the Central government. With active support from the Public Affairs Centre (PAC) which extends a helping hand to prepare the community to make villages free of open defecation, CSR conducted 12 ODF training programs in Kurunthencodu, Rajakkamangalam and Killiyoor Blocks of Kanyakumari district and 20 programs in Tirunelveli district, in collaboration with the DRDA.
Educating the participants about the importance of health and hygiene, promoting awareness on diseases spread through open defecation, making people conscious of the significance of preventing water-borne diseases and spreading knowledge on the construction technique of toilets to protect from ill–health form part of the content of the training programs. Members of VPRC [Village Poverty Reduction Committee], PLF [Panchayat Level Federation], HLF [ Hamlet level Federation] and CRP [Community Resource Persons] participated in the training programs.
Apart from these, 2 district level Dissemination Workshops and one Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting were conducted in support of the activities. The program has started to have good impact in the villages.
Women Empowerment Prgoramme
To overcome the economic dependence and social subordination, CSR empowers women and supports to increase women’s visibility. Since 1996 CSR pays special attention to the development and empowerment of women in rural and remote areas to Thiruchendure taluk of Tuticorin district. The target group consists of marginalized women and Palmyra tappers from Tiruchendure, Udangudi and Alwarthirunagri blocks of Tuticorin District.
The objective of the project is to strengthen the socio-economic and educational status of the weaker sections, to empower women and pave way for the holistic and sustainable development of rural people. ICICI Bank is doing major role for the welfare of our SHG members. CSR promoted Women Sangamam Federation promoted by our organisation is more effective in ensuring sustainability, equitable distribution of wealth benefit in developing and managing products and services affecting lives of people.
