DECEMBER 2009 EVENTS
CSR implemented, on behalf of TANSACS and APAC-VHS, a series of sensitization programmmes on HIV/AIDS from 16th July to 24th September 2009 for officials of various departments in five districts of Tamilnadu. The project was an integral component to sensitize officials and service agencies in the A & B districts to create an environment for scaling up implementation to achieve Goals of NACP III. The program was organized for 6 days in each of the five districts namely, Thirunelveli, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Theni and Ramnathapuram.
The Collectors of each of the five Districts actively involved in the program, namely Thiru. Mahesan Kasirajan IAS (Sivagangai), Shrimathi. Siji Thomas Vaidhiyan IAS (Virudhunagar), Thiru. M. Jeyaraman IAS (Thirunelveli), Thiru. P. Muthuveeran IAS (Theni) and Thiru. T.N. Hariharan IAS (Ramnathapuram). The key Officials participated were from Rural Development, Road Transport, Labour, Medical Officers of Missionary Hospitals and Heads of NGOs, together there were 1477 participants.
CSR undertook a campaign to create awareness among various stakeholders and cluster wise activities for the core group of MSMs (Thozhas), which was supported by APAC. The District level campaign addressed stakeholders like political leaders, lawyers, Panchayathraj officials and care providers, who were briefed on the sensitive issue of working among MSMs. They were oriented about activities planned amongst MSMs on prevention of HIV and promotion of Health check up, condom practice etc.

Songs developed by CSR were judged best among the APAC projects which was developed into a CD and released on 27th November 2009, by Hon. Speaker to the Tamilnadu Assembly Mr. Aavudayappan in the presence of Hon. Minister for Environment & Sports Mr. Moydeen Khan. The appreciation also followed with another project in training module for cultural teams of 11 Districts, which was headed by our Coordinator for Resource & Training Centre on Traditional Media, Mr. Palaniapillai. |
The Project aims to halt and reverse HIV epidemic through intervention among the core group of FSWs, MSMs and IDUs in Kanyakumari District, which is supported by APEC-VHS Chennai. The programme intents to disseminate information, behaviour change communication and to promote harm reduction programmes among the core group.
The project is expected to be implemented in five blocks of the Kanyakumari District, forming twelve clusters, each consist of one convener and six peer educators, facilitating STI/HIV/AIDS Care and Support activities, and community based forums representing stakeholders and service providers. The programme, started since October 2008 and projected till September 2011, facilitated periodical check ups, awareness programme, counselling and motivating the core group for ICTC.
The project, supported by PWDS- Abbott covers three blocks (Melpuram, Munchirai and Rajakkamangalam) of Kanyakumari District attending the needs of the children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.The beneficiaries are linked to the local services and resources with the help of community based forum consisting volunteers, community based counselors and faith based leaders. The families are helped to avail welfare schemes, which would augment monthly income benefiting treatment, education and better health. Skills are imparted for improved nutrition, hygiene, sanitation and families given training in home based care. The project has brought about sustainability and a reduction in the death ratio. |
The project initiated with the help of PWDS- Alliance intend to improve the health and environment of the children infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS in four blocks (Thovalai, Agastheeswaram, Kurunthencod and Rajakkamangalam) of Kanyakumari District. Children are provided nutritional and educational support and extended aid for house maintenance and medical needs. The assistance reduces the burden of the family especially in case of single parent family and caretakers.Support group meetings are held facilitating sharing of feelings and experiences and are helped for self-confidence and communication skills. CSR has successfully brought them under the ICDS programme and is lobbying for doubling-up the provision. |
Since 2007, CSR is involved in 39 Tsunami affected coastal villages (Melpuram, Munchirai, Kurunthencod and Rajakkamangalam blocks) to create awareness among PLHAs for measures in improved health and sanitation, home based care, availing services from Govt. health providers and adherence on ART. The core community is been given counseling and guidance to come together as support groups.
As part of empowerment, those interested are brought together as registered bodies and trained on Entrepreneurship Development Programme facilitating income generating micro enterprises. The families are trained on home based care, volunteers are trained on early identification, referral services and community is encouraged on mobilization to meet the needs of the core community. There were series of prevention programmes training youth as TOTs and adolescent girls on reproductive health encouraging them to percolate the knowledge among peer group.Village Development Associations were formed to look into the sustainability of care and support and resource mobilization. |
The project, which is supported by Malteser International, was extended to two other blocks (Agastheeswaram and Thovalai) of Kanyakumari district in 2009.
The project focused on marginalized women from Thiruchendur, Udangudi and Alwarthirunagari of Tuticorin District. A series of activities on Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Health awareness and improved economic achievement through income generation programmes are the key factors of the Project. The activities are implemented since a decade, through participation of the Self Help Groups who are also been trained in referral and assistance in seeking services.
The movement has helped forming Self Help Groups promoting income generation programmes. Another salient feature is the Family Insurance Scheme. CSR have created linkages with various banks for providing loans. Facilitated aid for Free Housing, Marriage, Land Patta (right to land holdings), Maternity assistance, LPG supply, Old Age Pension and streetlights. In 2004 a Women Federation was formed, called 'Sangamam'. The Federation bought land and built a Super Market whose business during the period 2008 – 2009 was Rs.24,92,873/-and have asset worth Rs.45,25,000/-. |
The Project aims to enhance access of ART Treatment and its adherence by PLHAs from seven blocks, namely Agastheeswaram, Rajakkamangalam, Thovalai, Kurunthencode, Thuckalay, Melpuram and Munchirai of Kanyakumari District in Tamilnadu. The Project supported by the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition and TIDES Network under HIV Collaborative Fund-South Asia, since June 2009, has so far trained 14 Barefoot Counsellors and 120 Peer Educators from the Community to motivate PLHAs on access and adherence.
Counsellors and PEs are involved in referral for OIs and conduct of monthly support group meetings. Orientations were held with Health Providers and Administration Officials to create an enabling environment. CSR observed World AIDS Day with a bike rally accompanied by Folk Arts and Puppet Shows from Kaliakkavilai to Nagercoil on 16th of December 2009. The rally was inaugurated by the District Revenue Officer and Collector in charge, Mr. Kalaichelvan. Rally addressed public along the 40 km distance on issues related to HIV/AIDS, care & support and elimination of stigma & discrimination.Performance by the folk group (in traditional attire) accompanied by Chenda Melam (group performance with drums, a permanent feature associated with all the festivals in South India ) was prime attraction for the public to gather around, which was utilized to disseminate the messages. |
The Puppet Show (Bommalattam, another traditional medium to propagate messages of social issues) depicted awareness themes. About 100 youth accompanied on motorbikes, each one holding placards carrying messages about prevention of HIV and care & support and wore T-shirts embedded with messages.
At Parvathipuram, outskirts of Nagercoil Town, Director of CSR, Mr.Ramkumar, lit the torch of 'enlightment' following with participants ran the rest of the distance with the torch to the Collectorate. The program ended with handing over the torch to Mrs. Ajitha Manothangaraj, District Panchayathraj Chairperson. Deputy Director of Health, Mr. Madhusudhanan gave the felicitation address and handed over certificates for all the participants of the bike rally. Also present were Personal Assistant Mr Vijayakumar, Ms Nicole from Malteser International, Managing Director CHARDEP, Mr G. Manikandan and President Positive Network Ms Greena etc.
CSR invited all families of beneficiaries for a get together celebrating the New Year. Eminent Personalities from District Administration and NGOs graced the occasion, who talked on confidence building and motivation.Invitees were given New Year gifts and savories. The programme was eventful with cultural activities and music, which was followed by lunch.CSR extends Best Wishes and Seasonal Compliments to all visitors to our site.
